Director of Engineering

Reporting to: CEO

We are seeking a director of engineering with exceptional leadership, communication, and project management skills, who operates with vision and integrity. You will be responsible for managing the development and deployment of process monitoring, machine vision, data insights, and closed-loop control products over an aggressive timeframe. You can expect to play an active role in the development and completion of projects, work closely with upper management to align engineering activities with company goals and objectives, and manage an international team of employees and contractors. You will interface regularly with prospects and customers at factories to understand and develop product requirements and must maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders.

You will, at this early stage, need to be hands-on with code, as well as check the code written by other developers on the team. As such, you should be a skilled developer with strong expertise in programming, software architecture design, database design, testing, and cloud-based infrastructure configuration. As the company grows, you must be capable of shifting your focus from technologies to management. Ideal candidates will also display a keen interest in international trends in engineering and leadership, and have demonstrated success in designing, architecting, and delivering industrial software platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Implement best practice engineering and project management strategies to execute scalable product development, in tandem with all key stakeholders
  • Develop and present engineering requirements, budgets and plans regularly
  • Manage on-site and remote engineering staff including hiring, training, coaching, mentorship, professional development, and performance management
  • Support and help refine business objectives by establishing product development goals and strategies
  • Participate in customer meetings or marketing activities from a technical perspective
  • Promote a strong culture consistent with the company's core values as the team grows
  • Manage team collaboration and documentation tools
  • Provide technical guidance to engineering teams and company management
  • Constant exploration and assessments of technological trends in the market and how they can be leveraged to create a competitive advantage


  • Design and help implement software architecture and features
  • Continuously improve and optimize application architecture and features over time
  • This includes but is not limited to:
    • Front end platform architecture
    • User interactions on web pages
    • UI/UX
    • Back end applications
    • Servers and databases
    • Web and mobile capabilities
    • APIs to interface with hardware and software data sources
    • On-premise and cloud infrastructure configuration
  • Interface with industrial customers to understand challenges and key metrics to optimize for different kinds of factories
  • Design and develop machine learning and deep learning systems for later products
  • Implement trained models into operations on the IndustrialML platform

Desired Experience:

  • 5+ years of industry experience defining, building, and deploying enterprise software
  • 2+ years experience building and leading a team with a customer-deployed end product
  • 2+ years of demonstrated success in technical project management (agile development)
  • BSc in Computer Science, Mathematics or similar field; graduate degree is a plus
    • Sufficient relevant experience will be considered in lieu of degrees
  • 10+ years experience writing and debugging robust code using Python, Elixir, Ruby on Rails, and/or analogs
  • Familiarity with machine learning frameworks (like Keras or PyTorch) and libraries
